Dr Elizabeth H Shayo is a Principal Research Scientist of the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) with BA and MA Social Sciences and Medical Anthropology, PhD on International Health and a post Doc. on Health Systems.
She has worked with NIMR for 21 years in different research projects both quantitative and qualitative in nature. Being a Principal Research Scientist with Social Science background, Dr Shayo has conducted a number of research in the areas of malaria, HIV/AIDS, Non-Communicable Diseases, tuberculosis, outbreak diseases including Ebola Virus Disease and COVID19, maternal and child health, gender-based violence, socio-cultural determinants of health and health systems.
She participated in the project on ‘Advanced HIV Disease (AHD)’ through assessment of care providers reflections on the implementation of strategies for preventing central nervous system (CNS) infection in routine care.
She has been a resource person in qualitative research and in research communication. She has knowledge and skills in developing policy briefs and to facilitate policy dialogue to share research findings with policy makers.
Dr Shayo has further conducted a number of studies focusing on the governance in the decentralized health care system. She has advocated for community empowerment in the management of different diseases including training of potential stakeholders such as community leaders, traditional health practitioners and community health workers. She has also coordinated Social Science component on linkages and acceptability of integrated health care services.
Dr Shayo has participated in writing four books, 22 technical reports and 59 peer reviewed publications. She is currently the head of Health Systems, Policy and Translational Research at NIMR, supervises doctoral candidates, masters’ students and early career investigators based in Tanzania and internationally and has received awards of the best research scientist at NIMR-four times.
